As part of our partnership with leading charity PDSA and our commitment to making services accessible to the local community, Animal Trust Dewsbury hosted their first pet first aid event last month.
The event, which has previously been hosted by Animal Trust Ellesmere Port, was delivered by a PDSA Community and Education Nurse and saw 15 delegates attend. All attendees were members of the general public who have an interest in animal welfare and individual reasons for attending the pet first aid course.
Speaking about the event, Kylie Jones, a PDSA Community and Education Nurse who delivered the course said; “Our pet first aid courses are always really popular as they are a fantastic way for pet owners to learn some really important and useful skills about how they can keep their pets safe.’’
The course ran between 10am – 4pm and was delivered using a mixture of theory led work, case study examples, group discussions and practical exercises. Kylie continued; “The aim of the course is to educate pet owners on how to recognise when something isn’t quite right with a pet. We provide delegates with the tools to act effectively in an animal emergency and learn how to prevent some emergencies from occurring.’’
Hosted with the support of the College of Animal Welfare (Leeds centre), delegates left with the knowledge of;
• Recognising what is normal for their pet
• How to bandage a pet correctly
• Understanding heatstroke and how to spot the signs and symptoms
• Being aware of seizures and what to do in the event of one
• Knowing how to resuscitate their pet
Owen Monie, Director General at Animal Trust says; “Our collaboration with PDSA is working really well and this is the third pet first aid course we have held at our surgeries. At Animal Trust, we’re so committed to making good veterinary care accessible and affordable to local communities and our PDSA partnership really supports this ethos.”
Kylie adds; “Getting to work alongside Animal Trust and using their great facility to host our events has been fantastic and I’m looking forward to continuing our work together in the future to support more pet owners.”
