Symptoms of Haemorrhagic Gastroenteritis
Symptoms usually develop quickly and include diarrhea with blood (like raspberry jam); vomiting; not eating; tiredness; abdominal pain; loss of fluids (Dehydration) which can lead to general shock. Hemorrhagic gastroenteritis is not considered contagious. Similar symptoms can be caused also by other conditions such as food toxins or parvovirus.
When to contact your vet
Contact your vet if you notice any of the symptoms above as if the condition is treated quickly your dog can make a full recovery.
Diagnosis of Haemorrhagic Gastroenteritis
Diagnosis is usually based on sudden symptoms of acute bloody diarrhea. Blood tests and diagnostic imaging may be performed by your vet to rule out other conditions and look for signs of inflammation in the bowel.
Treatment of Haemorrhagic Gastroenteritis
If the pet is very dehydrated, fluid treatment directly into the blood stream may be needed; anti sickness medication is administered for any vomiting or nauseousness; a small amount of easily digestible food, like chicken and rice or adequate prescription diet food should be offered little and often; antibiotics may be needed if there is evidence of a bacterial infection; pain medication for any tummy pain; probiotics may help to shorten the duration of the diarrhea.
Prevention of Haemorrhagic Gastroenteritis
There is no known prevention for HGE in dogs as the exact cause is still unknown.
Outlook
It is best when dogs are seen by a vet in the early stage of their symptoms. If left untreated, some pets get worse and can develop serious complications which can lead to death.
