Milo the Shih Tzu keeps his good eye

Milo is a nine-year-old Shih Tzu. When he first came to Animal Trust Vets Ellesmere Port, he had recently lost an eye and was battling a serious infection at the surgical site. To make matters more concerning, his remaining eye had developed painful ulcers and was at real risk of being lost too.
Given the severity of his condition, Milo was admitted to Animal Trust’s Ellesmere Port hospital, one of our 24/7 inpatient care sites. Our round-the-clock veterinary and nursing teams were able to monitor him continuously, ensuring he received immediate attention whenever he needed it — something that can make all the difference in complex or rapidly changing cases.
During his stay, Milo received intensive inpatient care, including a culture swab to identify the infection and targeted intravenous antibiotics to fight it effectively. The infected tissue was carefully removed, and thanks to the close monitoring and dedicated nursing support available 24 hours a day, his surgical site was able to heal smoothly and without complication.
At the same time, Milo’s remaining eye required urgent specialist attention. Our ophthalmology vet, Sam, identified an underlying condition that had been contributing to the ulcers. Because Milo was already hospitalised, we were able to begin the right treatment immediately, adjusting it as needed based on his response.
Animal Trust’s 24/7 inpatient service, alongside our Pet A&E facilities, means pets like Milo can receive seamless, continuous care — from emergency admission through to recovery — all under one roof. This level of support is especially important for patients who are critically ill, in pain, or at risk of rapid deterioration.
Thanks to this comprehensive care, Milo’s ulcers are now healing well, his remaining eye has been saved, and he is comfortable and enjoying life again. We wish Milo a happy, healthy future!
