Budgeting for Vet Care

At Animal Trust, we know how much your pet means to you, and we also understand that the cost of veterinary care can sometimes be a worry. That’s why we take a practical, open, and supportive approach to help you make the best decisions for your pet's health without added stress.

Talk to us early
If you’re ever concerned about the cost of treatment, don’t hesitate to speak to a vet or nurse as early as possible. Being honest about your situation allows us to:

  • - Prioritise your pet’s care effectively

  • - Explore alternative treatment options

  • - Tailor a plan that works for both your budget and your pet’s needs

We're here to work with you, not to judge or pressure.

Do you offer discounts or payment plans?

While we aim to keep our services as affordable as possible for everyone, we don’t offer discounts or payment plans. That’s because offering instalments would increase our operating costs and, in turn, raise prices for all clients.

But that doesn’t mean you're on your own, far from it.

Ways we help you access care
We offer several ways to help you manage the cost of veterinary treatment:

  • PawAssist Pet Health Plan: our cost-effective health plan can make routine care more affordable and help reduce the long-term cost of some conditions

These options are designed to give you peace of mind and flexibility when budgeting for your pet’s care.

Other support available
If you're experiencing financial hardship, there are charitable organisations that may be able to help. Subject to eligibility, you might qualify for support from:

  • Local animal charities

We’re always happy to signpost you to these resources where appropriate.

In a pet emergency

All veterinary practices are required to provide emergency care, regardless of your ability to pay. However, in these cases, treatment may be limited to the most critical interventions, such as stabilisation or pain relief, until further arrangements can be made.

Pet insurance: is it worth it?

Pet insurance can be an excellent way to prepare for the unexpected. It helps protect against the cost of unforeseen treatments, giving you peace of mind when your pet needs urgent or ongoing care.

When choosing a policy, consider:

  • Coverage type: some policies only cover a condition for 12 months, while others offer lifetime cover

  • Excess and premium: higher excess can reduce your monthly payments, but will mean more out-of-pocket costs during treatment

  • Pre-existing conditions: these may not be covered if you switch insurers

  • Deferment periods: be aware of waiting periods before you can make a claim

If your premiums have become unaffordable, especially for older pets, speak directly to your insurer. Adjustments like increasing the excess or changing cover levels might help reduce your costs while still protecting your pet.
