Gino the Dachshund has IVDD surgery at Animal Trust Bolton

Gino’s owners brought him to Animal Trust Vets Bolton after they noticed his mobility was not normal and he seemed to be in pain. He was diagnosed with chronic spinal cord compression caused by Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD), a condition that’s especially common in Dachshunds.
IVDD is a spinal condition where the cushioning discs between the vertebrae in the spine begin to harden or slip out of place. When this happens, the disc material can press on the spinal cord, causing pain, nerve damage, and in more severe cases, difficulty walking or even paralysis. It can develop gradually or occur suddenly, and early veterinary attention is important to improve outcomes.
Gino underwent surgery (a hemilaminectomy) with vet surgeon Viktoria, to relieve the pressure on his spinal cord. Just two days later, he was home with pain relief and crate rest to aid his recovery. Within two months, his mobility had improved significantly, and he was back to enjoying life on four paws.
If your dog shows signs of back pain or difficulty walking, early diagnosis and treatment can make all the difference. Contact our vet for advice immediately.
