Lovely Nell was referred from our Rhyl practice to our Pet A&E hospital for treatment to remove fluid that was affecting her breathing.
Nell is a four-year-old English Springer Spaniel. She was brought to Animal Trust Vets Wrexham after her owner noticed worrying changes in her breathing. On initial examination, it was clear that Nell needed urgent further investigation, so she was quickly transferred to our Pet A&E hospital in Ellesmere Port for advanced diagnostics and continuous monitoring.
At Ellesmere Port, our team carried out X-rays and ultrasound scans, which revealed a life-threatening buildup of fluid around her lungs, a condition that can rapidly become critical without immediate intervention. Nell was able to receive prompt, intensive treatment without delay.
Our dedicated veterinary and nursing teams acted quickly, placing chest drains to remove the fluid and relieve the pressure on her lungs. This required careful management, with the drains being monitored and used every few hours. Because Nell remained in our hospital, she benefited from constant observation, allowing our team to respond instantly to any changes in her condition and adjust her treatment as needed.
Over the course of a week, Nell received round-the-clock inpatient care, including pain relief, supportive therapies, and continuous monitoring. Having 24/7 on-site vets and nurses meant there was no need for stressful transfers between day and night services, she stayed in one place, with one dedicated team overseeing her recovery every step of the way.
As her condition gradually improved and the fluid accumulation came under control, Nell became stable enough to return home, where she could continue her recovery in a familiar environment with ongoing support from our team.
Nell’s case highlights the importance of immediate access to emergency care and the value of continuous inpatient support. Animal Trust’s 24/7 Pet A&E centres are designed to provide seamless, high-quality care for critically ill patients — ensuring they receive the right treatment, at the right time, all under one roof.
We’re so pleased to see Nell on the mend and wish her a smooth and full recovery.
