Florence has treatment for eye ulcer

Florence is an 8-year-old Staffie. She was referred to Animal Trust Vets Ellesmere Port for an ophthalmology consultation due to a painful, non-healing ulcer in her left eye. Despite her discomfort, she remained a bright and happy girl throughout her illness.
After a thorough ophthalmic examination with vet Sam, along with laboratory analysis of corneal samples, Florence was diagnosed with SCCED (Spontaneous Chronic Corneal Epithelial Defect). This condition is seen most commonly in older dogs and occurs when the surface layer of the cornea fails to heal properly after an injury, resulting in a persistent ulcer. These ulcers can be painful and may cause excessive tearing, squinting, and sensitivity to light, and without appropriate treatment, they can take a long time to resolve.
To help Florence, the veterinary team performed a specialised procedure under general anaesthetic to gently stimulate healing of the corneal surface. This helps remove the non-adhering layer of cells so that healthy tissue can regrow. Following the procedure, Florence continued with a course of medical management including eye drops and regular monitoring to support recovery and prevent infection.
Over the following weeks, her eye gradually healed as expected, and she showed significant improvement in comfort and vision. We are delighted to see Florence now feeling much more comfortable again and back to her happy, lively self.
