Duchess has life-saving heart surgery

Heart surgery for Duchess the Dachshund

This is Duchess, a 7-month-old Dachshund.

At three months old, Duchess came for a puppy check at Animal Trust Ashton, vet Ioanna detected a very loud heart murmur. A heart scan confirmed a serious heart defect called a patent ductus arteriosus. This condition will eventually cause heart failure, usually within a year.

Duchess was referred to Animal Trust Ellesmere Port. Vet surgeon Mary, assisted by Dylan and surgical nurses Molly and Katie, performed a complex procedure to repair the issue.

Duchess remained in hospital for 24 hours following her procedure and recovered well. Her post-operative checks have shown complete resolution of her heart murmur. Duchess should go on to live a normal life, and we wish her good health.
