This is Elsie, an 11-year-old Labradoodle. Elsie is a patient at Animal Trust Vets Rhyl. Recently, Elsie’s owners noticed she was very lethargic and generally under the weather. They brought Elsie into our Rhyl clinic for an appointment with vet Zoe, and after a same-day urine test, diagnosed Elsie with diabetes.
Diabetes in dogs is a condition where the body is unable to properly regulate blood sugar levels, usually because the pancreas does not produce enough insulin. Insulin is a hormone that helps move glucose from the bloodstream into the body’s cells, where it is used for energy. Without enough insulin, glucose builds up in the blood, which can lead to symptoms such as increased thirst, frequent urination, weight loss, and tiredness. If left untreated, diabetes can become serious and may cause long-term complications.
Elsie was prescribed insulin, the main treatment for diabetes in dogs, and also had a sensor device fitted, which communicates with an app so that her glucose levels can be monitored closely and the dose of insulin optimised.
This careful monitoring has meant that Elsie has responded very well to treatment and is now back to her old self, full of life.
Elsie’s owners - ‘a big thank you to Zoe and all at Animal Trust Rhyl, we have our old dog back.’
