Mo: Emergency Surgery After Swallowing Stones

When two-year-old Labrador Mo was brought to Animal Trust's Ellesmere Port hospital as an emergency, he was extremely lethargic and had pale gums. Our veterinary team immediately began stabilising him while investigating the cause of his condition.

It was discovered that Mo had swallowed stones, which had become lodged in his digestive tract and caused significant damage. He was critically unwell and needed emergency surgery. Following the operation, our veterinary team remained extremely concerned about Mo’s chances of recovery. He had developed septic shock and needed two days of intensive care. His condition remained critical, and the team were very worried about whether he would pull through.

Then, on day three, Mo started to show signs of improvement. He stood up for the first time – a huge moment after such a difficult few days and an encouraging sign that he was beginning to recover. Thankfully, Mo is now back home with his family and getting back to his normal self.

Pets eating things they shouldn’t can cause serious, potentially life-threatening problems for pets. Objects that are swallowed can become lodged in the digestive tract and may cause damage that requires urgent treatment or surgery. If you’re concerned that your pet has swallowed something they shouldn’t, seek veterinary advice as soon as possible. Early assessment and treatment can make a real difference.
