Cat recovers from Feline Infectious Peritonitis

Margot the Cat Recovers from FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis)

This is Margot. Margot's owner was worried about her a few months ago, she didn’t seem herself and had lost interest in going out or eating, which was unusual for her. Margot was brought in to see vet Zoe at Animal Trust Vets Rhyl.

After running a series of tests, Margot was diagnosed with FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis). FIP is a serious viral disease caused by a mutation of feline coronavirus, which is relatively common in cats but usually harmless. In some cases, however, the virus changes and begins to affect the body’s immune system, leading to widespread inflammation. This can impact major organs such as the liver, kidneys, brain, and eyes. Symptoms can vary depending on the form of FIP, but often include weight loss, lethargy, fever, fluid build-up in the abdomen or chest, and neurological signs in more advanced cases.

Historically, FIP was considered almost always fatal, making it one of the most feared diagnoses in feline medicine. However, recent advances have led to the development of antiviral treatments that can be highly effective when started early and managed carefully.

Margot has been receiving antiviral therapy and will continue to be closely monitored over the coming months with regular check-ups and tests to track her progress. We are very pleased to say she is responding well to treatment and is already showing encouraging signs of improvement, with her energy and appetite beginning to return.
