Orthopaedic Referral: Surgery for Elderly Patient

Tiny Man, a 10-year-old Shih Tzu who came to Animal Trust after a tumble at home left him with a fractured front leg. Tiny Man was referred to Dylan at our Referrals Centre in Ellesmere Port.

Although the accident itself appeared low-impact, further investigation was essential. A CT scan of both front legs was carried out as a precaution to fully assess the extent of the injury and rule out any underlying structural weakness. The scan revealed a small crack in the humerus bone, a condition that can occur in some dogs and significantly increase the risk of fracture, even following minimal trauma.

Dylan surgically repaired Tiny Man’s fractured humerus, carefully stabilising the bone to allow safe healing and a return to normal limb function. Six weeks later, once recovery from the initial surgery was well underway, a preventative procedure was performed on the opposite front leg. A protective screw was placed into the humerus to reduce the risk of a similar fracture occurring in the future.

This second surgery was guided using a custom-made 3D-printed drill guide, created specifically for Tiny Man. In fact, it was the smallest drill guide our team has ever used, enabling precise screw placement while minimising surgical time and tissue disruption.

We’re delighted to report that Tiny Man has recovered brilliantly from both surgeries. His lameness has completely resolved, and he has returned to comfortable, confident movement.
