CT Scan: What to Expect

Pre-scan fasting
Pre-scan fasting, your pet shouldn’t eat for 12 hours before the scan. This ensures clear images and helps reduce the risks associated with anesthesia.
Check-in and evaluation
Our team will perform a thorough check-up, including bloodwork, to ensure your pet is healthy and ready for anesthesia. Bear in mind this will be preparation time beforehand and recovery time after the procedure, so expect your pet to be in the clinic for the whole day.
Anesthesia and scanning
Your pet will be safely placed under anesthesia to help them remain still during the scan.
X-ray
CT works by producing multiple individual images, sometimes called slices, of the region of interest via X-rays and a computer with creating complete detailed 3D images of your pet’s internal structures.
The entire process for CT scan taking pictures usually takes about 30 minutes, but this can vary depending on the number of scans needed.
Monitoring of pet post sedation
Your pet will be monitored as they recover from sedation or anesthesia.
Discharge appointment
You'll be given a discharge appointment which usually will be at the end of the day.
Results
The vet will discuss the scan results with you and outline a treatment plan, either during a phone call or at your discharge appointment.
