Read about Jojo's emergency surgery

Jojo is an eleven-year-old Bishon Frise cross. Jojo recently underwent life-saving surgery. Jojo was referred as an emergency to our soft tissue specialist, Dylan, at our Animal Trust Ellesmere Port hospital after being diagnosed with a gallbladder mucocele at Animal Trust Shrewsbury.
A gallbladder mucocele is a serious, life-threatening condition where the gallbladder becomes obstructed, leading to a build-up of mucus and bile. This obstruction can cause dangerous complications. Given how critical this condition can be, prompt removal of the gallbladder is recommended to prevent further health issues.
Jojo’s surgery was a success. We are happy to report that Jojo made an impressive recovery; she quickly regained her appetite and was back to her normal, happy self!
Animal Trust Vet Referral Services
Animal Trust referral services provide access to advanced veterinary care for pets needing more complex treatment, surgery or a second opinion. They are available to both Animal Trust clients and pet owners registered with other vets, meaning anyone can be referred for further investigation or specialist input when a condition is more complicated than routine practice care can manage.
Referrals are typically used for cases requiring orthopaedic surgery, soft tissue procedures, advanced imaging (such as CT scanning) or complex medical work-ups. Once referred, the Animal Trust team works closely with the pet’s usual vet to ensure joined-up care, so owners can access expertise without losing continuity with their primary practice.
Importantly, access is straightforward and open—owners do not need to be long-term Animal Trust clients. If a pet owner is concerned, they can ask their regular vet to complete a referral, or in some cases, contact Animal Trust directly for guidance on next steps. The referral team then reviews clinical history and arranges a consultation to assess the pet and discuss treatment options.
This makes referrals a valuable route for a second opinion, especially when symptoms persist, a diagnosis is unclear, or owners want reassurance about the best treatment approach for their pet.
