Gaining your qualifications is one thing – but putting your learnings into practice and gaining experience on the job is a whole other ball game, as RVN Ben knows.
“As a recently qualified RVN, I wanted to gain experience in a busy practice. I liked the ethos of Animal Trust and joined the team in October 2021,” he said.
“The Blackburn branch workload was a lot more varied than my previous practice, and in the few short months I’ve been employed, I’ve gained invaluable experience in every aspect of the job – especially in anaesthetics and consults, which I enjoy the most. The vets at Blackburn are top notch and are all keen to help progress my learning.

“Working a few night shifts in the Bolton branch gave me a good insight into what the 24-hour hospital is like. The patient caseload is really varied and the night staff are first-rate. I worked closely with Hazel, who was amazing and super helpful. Although she was busy, she showed me a few things that I had not experienced before and was keen to teach me how to become a better nurse, which was really useful and has hopefully made me a better RVN.
“Overall my time at Animal trust has been incredible. Friendly staff, support from mentors and colleagues, and there is a real team spirit – things like that are so important and make coming to work and doing your job so much easier,” he added.
